STOCK GIFTS
(1) Donors who own a security (stock/fund) with an unrealized gain can gift the shares and avoid potential capital gains tax.(2) Donors also benefit from this strategy if they hold a highly concentrated position in a stock/fund. Gifting concentrated shares allows a donor to reduce individual security risk, avoid potential tax and receive a deduction for the full market value of the gifted shares.
(3) Donors are able to deduct the full market value of the gifted shares at the time of the gift (subject to IRS limits). The nonprofit isn’t subject to capital gains tax and therefore can sell the shares and capture the value of the full gift with no tax consequence.
